Earlier this year, I started a job in which my boss, who interviewed me, seemed like a great guy, really good leader, etc. Then within the first 48 hours of working for him, I instantly noticed he was verbally abusive to his employees. He would hold any failure or gap in knowledge over an employee's head, complain about their shortcomings, but then refuse to teach. Needless to say, I left within a month. Sadly, this is a trend I have seen in at least 3 other IT departments in my region.

My fear with career coaches is that it might not be worth it because there is no revenue as a result of it. Good luck in getting your money back due to dissatisfied services. The coach will argue that he delivered the services offered and it was you who implemented them incorrectly. This is a problem with selling vaporware.

i thought i was doing things wrong but these are actually great advice i delayed work in a part-time work and currently doing full-time SE job for a SCM company, and i just delay everything because they are not technical and i am doing management more with them

If you are not willing to compromise the quality by finishing faster and you think you are irreplaceable and you think will find plenty of open programming jobs...you will be in a world of surprise. I am from East Europe and I can't wait to take somebody else's job from the West. I can work longer hours, weekends and I am willing to work cheaper for the same quality .Get real and get real fast

Defining when the work is done is as important as politely refusing more work. In the early days of web design I worked part-time and freelanced. I had one client / business that, after I finished the work, were happy and wanted more. I ended up working on site and got stuck with them too long when I should’ve moved on broadening my client base.

This is a great video, but it definitely is triggering my imposter syndrome. Being a tech professional for 11 years and everytime I think of a service offering, I just think of the worst case scenarios and embarrassing myself. For a future video, could we have some day in the life kind of content where you and some of you coached folks show what their individual consulting workflow is like? I'd love to see some folks who have to bring humility into their consultation but still put together a win.

Programming is sick career. First long life learning with huge overload. You are always in risk to be obsolate or your tech to be liquidated. Second tech jobs do not provide a lot of security. Workplaces are toxic in most cases with fake culture and ageism....

Just finishing a project proyected to 4 months that was extended to 1 year...so bad in negotiations, the part of getting right with the due dates and the payment is essential... Learned the hard way.

just be a contract developer, join a existing team, let their team leader or manager handle all the bs, not you

I agree with your characterization, yeah. I would suggest that we need to stop using the term "trade-off" though as I don't think it captures the spirit of what's being done correctly. I see many architects as trying to figure out the right cocktail of compromises, versus striving to *eliminate* trade-offs! That's the real talent.

I know first step: "open all your holes to IRS".

How do you convince people to buy your service instead of using an outsourced developer who speaks perfect English and is half the cost? That's what you're up against these days.

Where are you along the journey to start solo consulting? If you're thinking about it, what step is holding you back?

What I gather from this is that you have Scrum with incompetent management. If the PO is in the daily and turns it into a status update for the progress police, you don’t need to “remove PO’s from the daily”, you just need a new PO that can understand engineering and engineers enough to do their job. The same applies for management turning velocity into a performance KPI.

How senior devs code: They don't

Actual productive companies don't waste time on SCRUM and all that useless mumbo jumbo. Companies that do SCRUM gaslight you into thinking that it's the only way to be organized. But no it's not.

True… but.. if you dont struggle, you dont learn.

The fact, that you have to explain this is quite indicative that we are declining as society.

After 34 years in software as a tester, developer and manager, I can say that you have nailed these issues and what to do about them perfectly. I have been there. If you are just starting out in this field or if you are burning out with frustration and despair, if you do nothing else, listen to this guy and do exactly what he recommends. I also had to learn these things all on my own through very painful experience but they DO work if you follow them scrupulously and without ANY ego.

Literally the first law in the 48 laws of power. Never outshine the boss. Highly suggest anyone reading this checkout that book in addition to how to win friends and influence people. Not necessarily to manipulate others but more to protect yourself and your sanity.

The problem isn't the devs - it's the management! This is why my company doesn't have such structures. If you aren't producing, you're not hired.

A lot of this Advice Supersedes even the soft dev. industry. I am in a completely different field and a lot of this is relevant. Thanks for the great advice! Great Guitar segues, That's a nice touch!
